I love writing; I love being able to create stories on paper in a way that makes them come to life. In so many ways writing is a release for me, especially when I’m trying to balance my lifestyle, work and any other insanities. To write and create suddenly takes me into a world that switches my mind off reality, even for the briefest of time. It helps me to sometimes even gain perspective and make sense of this crazy world that we live in.
The best thing about writing is that you hold the control button. You can take your story wherever it pleases you, and no one is setting the rules or telling you which way to go. It’s scary, unknown, but it’s also incredibly exciting.
Now I have started to write for public viewing, having published my stories and left myself wide open in this secret, creative world for all to view. Initially I thought I would be more afraid of allowing my stories to be read by others, giving myself up to the critiques, unsure of how my stories would be received; but no. In many ways it has sparked my energy to write more and think of new ways to reach my readers, in different genres and styles. I am constantly inspired and motivated by other writers I have met on this journey and their wonderful achievements and the success of their publications.
I initially thought that as a writer you had to choose one genre and perfect that art; yet I see many successful writers move across genres, each of their stories taking a new perspective and a different style of writing. What I have learned is that there is no right or wrong genre for writers; that it’s purely about style and originality. Sometimes you have to let your ideas flow and let them take you on a journey, letting the words spill out of your fingers and onto the screen in front of you, letting your imagination run free.
That is the pure thrill of this process of writing, you never know where it will take you, and it’s all an adventure where you have nothing to lose and everything to gain.
Where is your writing taking you today?
